Our Book Reading for the month:

“The Crow & A Convict’s Odyssey” -by ‘Upoh’ (abbreviated Ewe Poh).

Not so long ago, Ewe Poh’s friend noticed a black crow sitting on the side mirror of her husband’s car as he drove into the porch of their home in Penang. For the next few weeks, this same crow would fly towards her husband’s car and sit on the side mirror accompanying him as he drove along the road leading towards their home. Soon her husband became quite acquainted with the crow and one fine evening, he put out his hand to the crow and the bird flew towards him and landed on his hand! He took the bird into the house much to her friend’s amazement, and from that day the crow became pretty much another member of her family.

This book is inspired by the extraordinary relationship between the crow and her family - the bird’s incredible display of intelligence, its pranks and the many magical moments shared between them. It is also inextricably linked to Ewe Poh’s fascination with the British’s transportation of convicts in the mid to late 19th century in New South Wales.

The story is told through a character she created - a Japanese boy by the name of Kenzo as well as his friends; their relationship with the crow that would draw them into a series of adventures leading to the unveiling of a convict’s story

Book Reading LOVERS AND STRANGERS REVISITED - by Robert Raymer

Robert Raymer, who teaches creative writing at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak, will read one of his stories and talk about how you can turn your ideas into short stories, using examples from Lovers and Strangers Revisited whereby he turned his ideas into a collection of 17 Malaysian short stories that have now been published 63 times in 9 countries, taught at four Malaysian universities, and in SPM literature (”Neighbours”).

In the title story, a selfish writer gets more than he bargained for when former lovers haunt him in more ways than one. In another story, a man’s loneliness turns into obsession when he shares a taxi ride with a Malay woman. A Clark Gable lookalike is a barrister wannabe with a shocking secret and gossipy neighbours reveal more about themselves than the man who commits suicide. Elsewhere, expats cross the border to Had Yai to experience a good bargain in the Thai flesh trade before going home to their wives in America.

In this republished edition of Lovers and Strangers Revisited, Robert’s snapshots of scenes from various walks of life provide an insider-outsider view on love, family and culture, and urges a second look at ourselves in the mirror of self-awareness.
